Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of the teeth and is caused by bacteria in the mouth. It can cause considerable discomfort and in some cases even serious health complications.
How does tooth decay develop?
Bacteria in the mouth accumulate in dental plaque and convert sugars from food into acids. These acids attack the enamel, allowing the bacteria to penetrate deeper and cause decay.
Symptoms of tooth decay
Tooth decay shows itself only in its later stages, most often as toothache or sensitivity to hot, cold or acidic foods, etc. If the dental pulp becomes inflamed, the pain is constant.
Diagnosis and treatment of tooth decay
Tooth decay can be diagnosed during an examination of the mouth or on an X-ray. Treatment depends on the extent of the damage. Early stages can be managed with improved oral hygiene or infiltration with Icon; in later stages, the decay has to be drilled out and the tooth filled.
Preventing tooth decay
Prevention plays an important role, based on excellent oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist.
