About the field
Dental hygiene removes what a toothbrush at home cannot: hardened plaque above and below the gum line, and staining.
An appointment with us takes about an hour. It starts with a detailed assessment of your teeth and gums and continues with professional cleaning.
The second half of the appointment is just as important, though — we show you where your cleaning at home is falling short. Without this, the tartar will come back within a few months.
We work with Airflow technology and the GBT protocol: removing plaque and tartar is painless and gentle on the enamel and on restorations.
What dental hygiene offers
Prevention first
Regular cleaning is the most effective protection against decay and gum disease. And the least expensive.
Catching problems early
The whole mouth is examined during the appointment. White or red patches, sores that do not heal and lumps are better caught early.
Longer-lasting treatment
Crowns, bridges, fillings and root-treated teeth last longer when they are looked after.
An end to bad breath
Persistent bad breath most often comes from plaque and inflamed gums. Once the cause is dealt with, the bad breath disappears too.
Healthy gums
Removing tartar below the gum line prevents inflammation from turning into periodontitis.
Brighter teeth
Along with the staining from coffee, tea and smoking, the greyish tinge disappears too. It does not, however, change the natural shade of your enamel.
The technology we rely on
We work according to the GBT protocol — Guided Biofilm Therapy. The procedure is minimally invasive and comfortable even for patients with sensitive teeth.

Disclosing the biofilm
After the examination, we stain the teeth to make the plaque visible. This also shows you where your cleaning at home is falling short.

Airflow
A gentle stream of air with warm water removes biofilm and staining. No scraping and no pain.

Digital X-ray
We add it where a diagnosis needs to be confirmed — especially decay between the teeth, which cannot be seen by eye.
This makes the appointment gentler than conventional tartar removal and completely painless for most patients.
How we work
Assessment
First we look at where plaque is building up and what the gums look like. Based on this, we choose the approach and the frequency of further appointments.
Removing tartar and staining
Ultrasound and Airflow. No scraping and no pain.
Home care training
An interdental brush or floss, brushing technique, choice of toothpaste. Specifically for your teeth, not in general terms.
Your next appointment
Usually after six months. More often with periodontitis or implants.
What we treat in this field
Tartar
Hardened plaque above and below the gum line. Its rough surface attracts more plaque and increases the risk of gum disease.
Dental plaque
The main cause of decay and of gum inflammation. When it is not removed regularly, it is also behind bad breath.
Staining
Stains from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. Airflow removes them without harming the enamel.
Care of restorations
Implants and fixed restorations need their own cleaning routine — and at shorter intervals than healthy natural teeth.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I come?
Usually twice a year. With periodontitis, if you smoke or have implants, as often as every three months.
Does it hurt?
With Airflow and ultrasound, usually not. Sensitivity may occur where tooth necks are exposed — these can be numbed beforehand.
Will a hygiene appointment whiten my teeth?
It removes staining, so your teeth look brighter. It does not, however, change the natural shade of your enamel — that is what whitening is for.
How long does the appointment take?
About an hour. It includes the examination, the cleaning and home care training — that last part matters most for the long-term result.
Does the cleaning damage the enamel?
No. The GBT protocol is designed to remove biofilm while protecting both the enamel and the surface of restorations.
Isn’t brushing at home enough?
Brushing at home is the foundation, but you cannot remove hardened tartar with a toothbrush — especially not below the gum line. That is exactly where gum disease begins.
