Prevention and treatment of problems with the tissues supporting the tooth, the periodontium.
Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that focuses on periodontal disease and its consequences. In the worst case, it leads to the loss of healthy teeth.
At dental check-ups and hygiene appointments, the teeth need to be checked for tartar, which then has to be removed. Tartar harbours bacteria that damage the gums and the tissues supporting the tooth and also cause loss of the bone in which the tooth sits. This leads to inflammation of the gums and surrounding tissues, loosening of the teeth and eventually their loss.
Periodontology therefore deals with plaque and tartar, treats inflammation of the gums and surrounding tissues, treats periodontal pockets and, where necessary, includes periodontal surgery.
The aim of periodontology is to prevent problems and tooth loss.
