Sealing the fissures of the molars to prevent tooth decay from developing. It is carried out as soon as the molar has come through.
The chewing surfaces of the molars are uneven, with grooves in which food debris can collect, which increases the risk of tooth decay. Applying a “sealant” closes the grooves, the tooth becomes smooth and nothing sticks to it. Sealing therefore works as prevention against tooth decay. The procedure is non-invasive and completely painless.
It is recommended
- for children with baby teeth, who often have poorer oral hygiene
- for adults who had a lot of tooth decay in childhood
- for adults whose family has a higher incidence of tooth decay
- on newly erupting permanent molars in children
- on molars with deep grooves
The only disadvantage of sealing is that it has to be repeated. It lasts 3–5 years.
