Periodontology
Care of the gums and of what holds the teeth in place.

About the field
Periodontology looks after the tissues around the tooth: the gum, the bone and the connective tissue that hold the tooth in place. It is their loss, not decay, that is the most common cause of tooth loss in adulthood.
The disease progresses for a long time without pain. The first sign is usually bleeding when brushing — and that is exactly what is most often ignored.
Gingivitis is reversible. Periodontitis is not: we cannot bring back lost bone, but we can stop the disease and keep the teeth functional.
Smoking, stress, hereditary predisposition and diabetes make it worse. That is why, with periodontitis, we also ask about things that may seem to have nothing to do with the mouth.
What treatment offers
Preventing disease
Most gum problems can be prevented before they even start. The basis is oral hygiene and regular check-ups.
Keeping your own teeth
When periodontitis is under control, the teeth stay firm. That is less expensive and better than any replacement.
Targeted treatment
Deep cleaning below the gum line, root planing, and surgical treatment where that alone is not enough.
An end to bad breath
Persistent bad breath often comes from inflamed pockets. Once they are under control, the bad breath disappears too.
Firmer teeth
Stopping bone loss prevents the teeth from becoming loose.
Impact on general health
Chronic inflammation in the mouth does not stay in the mouth. Bringing it under control also helps with diabetes and heart disease.
How we work
Periodontal examination
We measure the depth of the pockets and assess the condition of the bone on an X-ray. Without measuring, it is impossible to say whether it is gingivitis or already periodontitis.
Non-surgical treatment
Deep removal of tartar below the gum line and root planing. For many patients, this is enough.
Surgical phase
Where pockets persist, surgical treatment follows, or guided tissue regeneration if appropriate.
Maintenance programme
Periodontitis comes back. Regular check-ups at set intervals are part of the treatment, not an optional extra.
What we treat in this field
Gingivitis
Inflammation caused by plaque that shows up as bleeding when brushing. At this stage, the condition is still fully reversible.
Periodontitis
Inflammation that is not caught spreads to the bone. Irreversible bone loss and loosening of the teeth follow.
Gum recession
Exposed tooth necks and sensitive teeth. Treated with deep cleaning and, in selected cases, a gum graft.
Periodontal abscess
Acute inflammation with pain and swelling. It requires treatment of the infected area and removal of the cause.

Frequently asked questions
My gums bleed when I brush. Should I stop brushing?
Quite the opposite. Bleeding is a sign of inflammation caused by plaque; skipping brushing makes it worse. Come in for an examination.
Can lost bone be restored?
Partly, through guided regeneration in selected cases. The main aim, however, is to stop the disease.
Is periodontitis linked to general health?
Yes. Chronic inflammation in the mouth is associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease; poorly controlled diabetes in turn makes periodontitis worse.
How can periodontitis be prevented?
By thorough cleaning, including between the teeth, and regular dental hygiene appointments. For patients at higher risk — smokers and people with diabetes — at shorter intervals.
Does treatment hurt?
Depending on the extent, deep cleaning is carried out under local anaesthetic. After treatment there is usually some sensitivity for a few days, especially to cold.
Why are check-ups needed even after successful treatment?
Because periodontitis comes back. The maintenance programme at set intervals is what determines the long-term result — more than the treatment itself.
