Caring for children’s teeth

About the field

Children’s dentistry looks after the teeth of children and adolescents and of patients with special needs. The focus is on prevention, not on treatment.

With children, the first experience is decisive. A visit that goes calmly is an investment for the next fifty years — fear of the dentist develops in childhood and is hard to overcome in adulthood.

The first check-up should take place when the first teeth are coming through, and around the first birthday at the latest. It is not yet about treatment but about getting to know each other and setting up a care routine.

Baby teeth are not something “that will fall out anyway”. They hold space for the permanent teeth, and losing them early is one of the common causes of crowding and a faulty bite.

What children’s dentistry offers

Prevention above all

The focus is on preventing problems: oral hygiene, fluoride treatment, fissure sealing and advice on diet.

A habit for life

A child who is not afraid of the dentist keeps coming for check-ups in adulthood. That matters more for their teeth than any treatment.

Treatment suited to age

A smaller mouth, a growing jaw, teeth coming through — all of this calls for a different approach than with an adult.

Monitoring development

Deviations in the development of the teeth and jaws are best caught early. Many of them are then easier to treat.

Guidance for parents too

Up to a certain age, brushing is the parents’ job. We show you exactly how to do it for your child.

Space for permanent teeth

A treated baby tooth holds the space. Losing it early can disrupt the position of the permanent teeth.

How we work

Getting to know us

The first visit is short and involves no treatment. Your child sits in the chair, looks at the instruments and leaves with a good experience.

Check-up and prevention

A check of the teeth, fluoride treatment and fissure sealing of the permanent molars.

Treatment at the child’s own pace

When treatment is needed, we proceed step by step and explain what we are doing. We do not pressure the child.

Parents present

We also explain to parents how to brush at home and what to do about diet — up to a certain age, brushing is their job.

What we treat in this field

First check-up

Getting to know the surgery and setting up a care routine. No treatment, no rush.

Decay in baby and permanent teeth

A baby tooth hurts just as much as a permanent one and is treated just as seriously.

Prevention

Fluoride treatment and fissure sealing once the permanent molars have come through — this is where decay most often develops.

Injuries and habits

A dental injury that cannot wait, and oral habits: dummies, thumb sucking and their effect on the bite.

Frequently asked questions

When should I bring my child for the first time?

Ideally around the first birthday, once the first teeth have come through.

Do baby teeth need to be treated?

Yes. They hurt just as much as permanent teeth, and losing them early affects the position of the permanent teeth.

What if my child is afraid?

We take our time. The first visit may end with just a look from a distance — the aim is for your child to come back a second time.

How often should children have check-ups?

Usually twice a year. For children with a higher risk of decay, more often — we will advise you based on the findings.

What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?

Call straight away. With a permanent tooth, the first hour is decisive: hold the tooth by the crown, not the root, rinse it and put it in milk. More in emergency care.
