Emergency dental care

About the field

Some conditions cannot wait. Severe pain, facial swelling, fever or a knocked-out tooth need treatment the same day — every delay makes the starting situation worse.

This also includes problems after earlier treatment: a cracked implant-supported restoration, or a damaged crown or veneer.

The aim of an emergency visit is to manage the acute condition: relieve your pain, drain the pus, treat the injury. The definitive treatment then follows at a calmer pace.

A general (non-dental) emergency service usually only relieves the symptoms with medication. It does not remove the cause, though — that is a job for a dentist.

When to contact us without delay

Not every problem is urgent. These are, however — and waiting makes them worse.

Examination after a dental injury

Severe toothache

Pain that does not ease off, wakes you up or gets worse when you lie down. It is usually caused by inflammation of the pulp or inflammation at the root tip.

Injury and broken tooth

A chipped, loosened or completely knocked-out tooth. With children’s permanent teeth, the first hour is decisive — it determines whether the tooth can be put back.

Swelling and abscess

Swelling of the gum or face, especially with a fever. The infection spreads and will not go away on its own.

Problems with a restoration

A filling or crown that has fallen out, a cracked restoration. It does not always hurt, but there is no point in putting it off.

How we work

Phone call

Describe what is happening. We will advise you what to do until you arrive and arrange an appointment. Calling ahead saves time for both sides.

Pain relief

The first step is a local anaesthetic and removing the cause — opening the tooth, draining the abscess, treating the injury.

An X-ray when needed

With injuries and inflammation, what cannot be seen is decisive. An X-ray shows the extent and determines the approach.

Definitive treatment

Once the acute condition has settled, we complete the treatment calmly and according to a plan.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do with a knocked-out tooth?

Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root, rinse it and put it in milk or saline solution. Call straight away — within an hour, there is usually a chance that it can be put back in place.

My face is swollen. Can I wait until the morning?

No. Facial swelling with a fever is a condition that needs treatment without delay.

Will antibiotics help instead of a visit?

No. Antibiotics suppress the infection but do not remove its source. Without treatment, the condition will come back.

Should I call ahead or just come in?

Call. From your description, we can tell how acute the condition is, advise you what to do until you arrive and prepare for your particular case.

Will everything be sorted out in one visit?

Not always, and that is not the aim. The purpose of an emergency visit is to manage the acute condition. Definitive treatment follows calmly and according to a plan.

Why not go to a general emergency service?

A general (non-dental) emergency service usually only relieves the symptoms with painkillers. The cause — decay, inflammation, injury — has to be treated by a dentist.
