Digital dentistry

Scanning instead of impressions, planning instead of guesswork.

About the field

Digital workflows replace two unpleasant steps: impression material in the mouth and guesswork when planning a procedure.

An intraoral scanner captures your teeth within a few minutes and without gagging. The data is sent to the laboratory electronically, so there is no distortion of the impression and no need to transport it.

With implants, digital planning makes it possible to determine the implant position before the procedure — based on three-dimensional data about the bone. This makes the procedure more predictable and shorter.

Digital data can also be stored and compared. The condition of your teeth a year from now can be compared with their condition today, not just described from memory.

What it offers patients

No impression material

The most common reason why patients dislike impressions simply disappears.

A more accurate basis

With a scan, there is no deformation of the material and no error when casting the model.

You see the result in advance

With prosthetic work, you can view the design on screen before it is made.

A shorter procedure

A planned procedure is carried out faster and with fewer adjustments on the spot.

Fewer visits

The data goes to the laboratory electronically. There is no need to transport impressions or take them again.

Comparison over time

A stored scan makes it possible to compare the condition a year later — which is valuable for findings that are being monitored.

Modern technology at our centre

Digital scanning, planning and 3D printing help us connect the individual steps of care. At our centre, we use the following technologies:

Straumann SIRIOS X3 intraoral scanner – manufacturer’s product image

Straumann SIRIOS X3

An intraoral scanner for digital impressions of the teeth. The 3D data obtained serve as the basis for treatment planning and the design of dental restorations.

Example of implant planning in the coDiagnostiX software

coDiagnostiX

Software for digital implant planning. It helps to assess the anatomical conditions, plan the position of the implants and design surgical guides.

Example of the Smilecloud interface for smile design

Smilecloud

A platform for digital smile design and for sharing the treatment plan between the dentist and the laboratory. The visualisation helps the patient understand the proposed changes.

SprintRay Pro 2 dental 3D printer – manufacturer’s product image

SprintRay Pro 2

A dental 3D printer for producing models and other appliances from a digital design. The specific use depends on the chosen material and treatment procedure.

Vatech

For diagnostic imaging, we use Vatech technology. We choose the examination according to the needs of each patient.

Product images and software examples come from the official materials of the manufacturers Straumann, Dental Wings and SprintRay. The software examples shown are not clinical cases from our centre.

How we work

Scan

Scanning the teeth with a small camera. No material in the mouth and nothing to trigger the gag reflex.

Design

We design the restoration or the implant position in software and show it to you before anything is made.

Fabrication and fitting

The data goes straight to the laboratory. The result fits more precisely and needs less fine-tuning in the mouth.

Where we use it

Impressions without impression material

Capturing the teeth with a scanner instead of an impression tray — for crowns, bridges and dentures.

Implant planning

Determining the implant position from three-dimensional bone data before the procedure.

Designing restorations

Crowns and bridges designed in software and produced by milling or printing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a scan more accurate than an impression?

For most types of work, yes — there is no deformation of the material and no error when casting the model.

How long does a scan take?

A few minutes per jaw. You can ask for a break at any time during the scan.

Will I see the result in advance?

With prosthetic work, usually yes — we will show you the design on screen.

Is scanning unpleasant?

Much less so than an impression. The camera is small and nothing stays in your mouth for several minutes at a time — which is why even patients with a strong gag reflex can manage a scan.

Do I pay separately for the scan?

No. It is part of the treatment for which it is used, not a separate additional item.
